Ben & Emily
Hello! Thank you very much for taking the time to learn a little about our family! We truly admire your brave and selfless decision to consider adoption. Few people have the opportunity to change the lives of others in such a profound way, and we are incredibly grateful that you are considering us to be the loving and dedicated parents of your child.
Our hearts are holding a place for one more, and we cannot wait to provide your child with a stable home full of love, learning, and laughter. Your child will know his or her birth and adoption story, which—of course—begins with your love, courage, and generosity.
It would be a tremendous honor to join you in this journey.
Emily, Ben & Nora
~ Boy Meets Girl ~
There is so much we want to tell you! We met during college on Ben’s first day of work at Borders Books where Emily worked in the café. It began with passing notes to each other and Ben finding excuses to drink too much coffee, and a few months later, we went on our first date.
And then a second. And then many more dates before Ben finally proposed after a Harry Potter book release party. And now, here we are—thirteen years later!—happily married, and extremely excited about welcoming another child into our family!
In our time together, we’ve grown up and shared countless milestones. Both graduating college. Two cross-country moves. Ben’s graduation from law school. Emily finishing grad school and becoming a licensed clinical social worker. Our first “real” jobs. Our first house. Becoming parents.
There have been lots of ups, a few downs, and several in-betweens, but—fortunately—mostly ups.
Today, we remain best friends and are true partners in life. We balance and support each other. We have an uncanny ability to know what the other is thinking.
We sometimes disagree, but we never go to sleep upset. We compromise. We make mistakes. We listen. We learn. We laugh. We strive to be the best parents we can be. We plan for our future, but always try to live in the present. We could not be more excited for our next amazing (and humbling) journey together: completing our family through adoption!

~ Emily, By Ben ~
Emily is an amazing wife and mother. She is smart, loving, compassionate, patient, and kind. She is my best friend, my partner, and my perfect match. Where I tend to be overly organized and a planner/ worrier, Emily helps me live in the moment.
Perhaps nowhere are Emily’s core values more apparent than in her chosen career. Every shift she works, she makes the world a little better. Not many people are able to say that, and I am truly in awe of her choice to give so much of herself to others.
I knew that Emily would be a great mom from the moment we brought home our first puppy, and she slept on the floor outside his crate for a week to comfort his cries.
Today, Emily is an amazing mom to our daughter, Nora. From late- night feedings to playdates to making her own organic baby food to diaper blowouts to happily reading the same book a hundred times, Emily does it all, and it all seems to come so naturally to her. Emily was born to be a mom, and I can’t wait to see her do it again with a second child!

~ My Job ~
I have the best job as a medical social worker. I currently work at a hospital providing emotional and practical support to patients rehabilitating from brain injuries and their families. I love my job, but my favorite—and far more important—job is being a mom.
I’m lucky to be able to work part-time with a flexible schedule, which will allow me to be home with the baby and Nora one or two days a week (and we’re especially lucky because my Mom will watch them the other days).
~ Ben, By Emily ~
Ben is a wonderful husband, friend, and father. He is ambitious, intelligent, and funny. We laugh A LOT. Ben has a big, sensitive heart and has been known to shed a few tears during a Pixar movie.
Ben is extremely organized and focuses on details, which is perfect for us because I prefer the big picture.
One of Ben’s favorite activities is volunteering with a national high school academic competition that he participated in during high school.
Ben loves teaching, and he has an amazing ability to connect with the students. I first knew Ben would be a good father from watching the way he interacted with our friends’ children and the way they responded to him. He is patient, 100% hands- on, and the absolute-best “tickle monster.”
It is such a joy watching Ben and Nora’s relationship grow. I’m so lucky to have Ben as my partner in this wonderful ride we call our life, and I am incredibly excited to embark on our next adventure together—adoption.

~ My Job ~
I’m an attorney. After several years working at a large corporate law firm representing huge companies in high-stakes litigation, I recently transitioned to public service as a deputy attorney general.
I absolutely love my new job with the State. My more-flexible schedule allows me to spend more time with my family. I’m always home for dinner, which is a welcome change from corporate law.
In the end, although I enjoy being a lawyer, my work does not define me. It is a means to an end, but it is that end—my family—that defines me. And my most important job (and the only one that really matters) is being a dad.
Meet Nora and Our Family
~ Meet Nora ~
On July 1, 2012, Nora surprised us all by arriving three months early, and she continues to surprise every day as a healthy, happy, funny, full-of-joy little girl! Nora is very curious and social, waving and smiling at everyone we pass, especially other kids.
She loves animals, especially her best buddies, Bodie and Kima. She also loves helping in the kitchen, going to the zoo, building castles with her blocks (and knocking them down), playing in our backyard, and the occasional iPad game.
She absolutely loves books, and it’s a true joy when she insists on “reading” a book herself. Bodie and Kima have heard a lot of stories! Nora is a sweet, caring toddler who absolutely loves being around other kids and taking care of her baby dolls—she will make a wonderful big sister.
~ Being Parents ~
We always knew we wanted to have a family, and because we both loved growing up with siblings, we always imagined having at least two kids. After several years of trying without success (and with the help of medical intervention), we were blessed with a pregnancy. But at just 27 weeks, Emily woke up feeling extremely sick. A few hours later, we had a baby— Nora. All one pound, eleven ounces of her.
Nora was in the hospital for 79 days, where she thrived and is now a perfectly healthy little girl. She’s truly a miracle, but the risks are too great to try a second time, and we are so thrilled to be able to complete our family through adoption.
We absolutely adore being Mommy and Daddy, and we are extremely excited about bringing another miracle—your child—into our family!
~ Emily’s Family ~
Emily’s parents, Julie and Kurt, have been married for 41 years. We’re extremely lucky that they live in the same town. Living so close, they’ve been a huge help with Nora, and they’re extremely excited about having a second grandchild to spoil.
Emily’s extended family (aunts, uncles, cousins) also lives nearby, so we’re able to see each other often, which is nice. Emily’s younger brother, Michael, currently lives in Baltimore, with his wife, Ashley, and we love when they come visit several times a year! We’re very fortunate to have such a large, loving extended family, most of whom live nearby.
Holidays—particularly Thanksgiving and Christmas—are special times, and one of our favorite family traditions is Christmas Eve dinner at Julie & Kurt’s house. It involves spicy Portuguese bean soup and way too many desserts. Emily’s mom takes Christmas very seriously, and spending Christmas day at her house—with aunts, uncles, and cousins stopping by— is what family is all about!
~ Ben’s Family ~
Ben’s Mom, Elissa, and stepdad, Mark, live in Washington state, where they own a pear orchard. They spoil Nora from afar, visit as often as possible, and can’t wait to meet their second grandchild.
Although we wish they lived closer, we’re definitely excited about visiting their farm, which is a pretty awesome place to be a kid (some of Ben’s best childhood memories are visiting his grandparents’ grape orchard). Ben’s Dad, Jeff, lives a couple hours away and is also able to visit frequently.
Finally, Ben’s older sister, Stephanie, currently lives in Amsterdam, where she is finishing her Ph.D. studies in Art History. She’ll be there for another couple years, so our next big family vacation will almost certainly be to Europe!
Ben’s family could not be more excited about welcoming a new little one to the family.
OUR HOME, COMMUNITY, AND PROMISES
~ Home Sweet Home ~
We love our house! It felt like home from the playground) and hiking trails. When we walk our dogs in moment we walked in, and it is absolutely perfect for raising kids!
It is sunny and spacious, with four large bedrooms, and a gorgeous kitchen overlooking the family room. It’s big enough that everyone—including the dogs—has personal space, but small enough that we’re never too far away. The back of the house is almost entirely windows overlooking our beautiful fenced backyard, with grass, flower beds, a huge oak tree, and a playhouse!
On the other side of the fence is a small creek and lush green open space, providing peace and privacy. But maybe the best thing of all is that Grandma and Grandpa live just a few minutes away!
We live in a small town near Sacramento, California. Emily grew up here, and it’s wonderful place to raise a family! There are parks everywhere, and the town offers swim and gymnastics classes for kids (including infants), as well as summer camps, sports leagues, and other fun activities.
There are lots of hiking and biking trails nearby, and we’re just a 5-minute drive from a beautiful lake for swimming, kayaking, fishing, and boating.
Our neighborhood is quiet, safe, and friendly. It is the definition of a “community.” Everyone looks out for each other, and we get to know each other at the annual Easter Egg Hunt, Halloween Parade, and during impromptu events like “Popsicles in the Park.”
Education is extremely important to us, so when we were looking for a new home, we only looked in communities with great public schools.
We’re a 5-minute walk from an award-winning elementary school, and the middle school and high school are just a short bike ride or drive away. All three schools are ranked in the Top 10% in the State, which is awesome!
