Dear Birth Mother: It’s so nice to meet you…even if just through this letter. Thank you so much for taking the time to consider me as the adoptive mother of your child. My name is Courtney and I’m excited to tell you a little bit about my life in the next few pages.
I have always wanted to be a mom and I’ve been so blessed to have the opportunity to become one through adopting my daughter Claire in 2018! It’s so important to me that Claire grow up in a family with siblings and I’m beyond excited to be at a place in our lives where we can start another adoption journey.
Adoption to me is a beautiful picture of lives coming together through choice, creating an eternal bond of love. I know you have a lot of things to think about during this time and I so appreciate you considering adoption. You are making such a courageous and loving choice. Please know how much I respect and honor you and will support you no matter what you choose.
I am a California girl born and raised in the golden state. I’ve lived in other places in the United States but I’ve always come back to California because it’s just home to me.
I purchased my single-family home a few years ago in a lovely and peaceful community in the Los Angeles suburbs. I love that my house is within driving distance of the beach, mountains and desert. I have had so much fun decorating Claire’s room and I can’t wait to decorate one of the other bedrooms as a nursery. The thing I fell in love with at my house though was the backyard. You only need to walk outside and there’s tons of grass, fruit trees, plants, and even a pool. It’s the perfect kids’ backyard and it’s been better than I could have ever imagined to watch Claire grow up playing in the backyard. She loves being outdoors and whether it’s picking oranges, swimming in the pool, or riding bikes, the backyard is where she’s at her happiest.
I love to travel! Experiencing other places and cultures and meeting people from around the world is one of my absolute favorite things to do! Traveling teaches you so much: about yourself, about history, art and architecture, and about people. I’ve been so blessed to travel all over the world and am so excited to continue traveling with Claire and her new sibling!
A few of my favorite travel memories:
• Taking Claire to the beach for the first time
• Feeding a koala in Australia
• A helicopter ride over an active Hawaiian volcano
• Showing Claire all the animals at the zoo, especially the zebras
• Heli-hiking on a glacier in New Zealand
• Visiting the Coliseum in Rome
Meet Claire: Claire has the cutest little personality. She’s a bit skeptical of new people initially but, once she gets to know you, she’ll shower you with hugs and kisses. She loves feeding the dogs, reading books, swimming (or really anything involving water!), waving goodbye, and playing with her stuffed animals. She’s wonderful around other kids! She knows how to be gentle with little babies and she also loves to play with the “big kids.” One of her first words was “baby” and now, she says it all the time. While she obviously doesn’t fully understand the process of a sibling addition to our family, she just adores kids and will be so excited to have a new brother or sister!
I still can’t get over how excited I am to be Claire’s mommy! My friends and family all tell me they’ve never seen me happier. From the moment she was born, I have loved her completely!! And I’m absolutely thrilled to welcome another child into our family! If it’s possible, I think I’m even more excited about adoption the second time! Opening my heart to another child is something I just can’t wait to do! I know he or she will make our family complete!
On Parenting: Parenting is the best, most incredible, rewarding and amazing job I’ve ever had! And it’s the hardest. I’m constantly learning something new about myself and Claire each day. But that’s what makes parenting so remarkable – each day is different and there’s always room to grow! I’m so blessed to have had so many great parenting examples in my life to learn from including my parents, grandparents, extended family, and wonderful friends. While I work hard each day to provide a solid foundation for Claire so she can be or do anything she wants in the world, the most important lesson I want her to learn is that she is loved and supported 100% of the time, no matter what! I believe the sky is the limit if you know you are truly loved and that is what I try to teach Claire every day, not only with my words but also with my actions. I want our family to be known for our love!
Some of my favorite things:
• Being a MOMMY!!
• My first Christmas with Claire
• Snuggling up with a good book, a cup of tea, and a cozy blanket on a cold day
• Going to Disneyland
• Making s’mores with my niece & nephews
• Hiking with Claire & the dogs
• Baking cookies
• The Ocean
More About Courtney
My Career: Learning new things is so important to me! I confess – I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to reading and learning. I was one of the “weird kids” who loved school and science!! I also love caring for people so going in to the medical field was an easy career choice for me. I chose to be a Nurse Practitioner as I knew this would allow me to pursue my love of medicine but also give me the flexibility in my work schedule to nurture and provide for my family.
I work in Oncology, the science of cancer. Although I absolutely loved treating and caring for each of my patients, I chose to step away from my busy clinic life a few years ago to focus on oncology research and education in order to better control my work schedule, work predominately from home, and allow me to be a “present parent.” I don’t want to rely on nannies or daycare – being a hands-on mom is so important to me! Plus, I just love every minute I’m with Claire!
Volunteering: One of the character qualities my family instilled in me and one I am trying to pass on to Claire is volunteering. This has taken many forms over the years but one of the most consistent is our volunteer work raising guide dogs for visually impaired people.
I’ve lost count of how many puppies we’ve raised over the years (we got our first dog when I was just five years old) but it seems like we’ve never been without a dog. Right now, I have two precious Labrador retrievers that are part of our family: Lucy, a six-year-old yellow lab and Alexa, a three-year-old black lab. They are so attentive with Claire and it’s so precious to watch Claire snuggle with them.
I Love A Good Book: Reading a good book to me is like having a conversation with your best friend! Opening up a book opens up the world and I think that’s why I love it so much! Classics, novels, thrillers, historical fiction, detective stories – I love them all!! I especially love reading books with Claire, many of them favorites saved from my own childhood!! Claire really enjoys reading too and often requests to “read” books instead of play with her toys!
On Sundays: Sunday mornings at church are a highlight of my week! And because I love children, I serve in our Children’s Ministry as often as I can!
While I would never force religion on or judge anyone, I promise to show your child the values and beliefs that have played such an important role in making me who I am today. Our church family is so special and supportive. We even have several families who’ve been built through adoption so there is such a loving community ready and waiting for another child to be added to our fun and caring group.
My Loved Ones: I grew up in a loving and supportive home with two incredible parents and a younger brother, along with wonderful grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. It’s important to me that my children grow up in a similar circumstance, surrounded by a large, caring network of family.
I can’t imagine my childhood without my brother and cousins and will make sure that Claire and a new baby experience the same crazy, loud, busy, and fun upbringing. One of the things I’m most thankful for is that my family always valued “experiences over stuff” and this is something I feel is important to pass on to my children.
Some of my favorite childhood memories are of camping, visiting museums all across the United States, seeing national parks, and singing songs over an open campfire, while roasting marshmallows of course.
My family is so important to me and we’re still super close to this day! My brother, Patrick, is married to my lovely sister-in-law Hannah, and I have an amazing niece, Chelsea, and two wonderful nephews, Ethan and Tyler, who I love to hang out with and who are Claire’s best buddies!
My mom, Carrie, is such a creative and giving grandmother who’s always coming up with new ways to have fun with her grandkids! We all live close to each other so getting together on the weekends (maybe for a pizza and game night?) is super easy.
My 83-year-old grandmother still loves to be part of the action, often planning family birthday parties at her house complete with horseback rides for the kids on her two horses. My amazing family welcomed Claire with open, supportive, and loving arms and are so excited to welcome in a new baby to our wild and fun clan!
