Erik & Sabine

Hello! We are Sabine and Erik from the Netherlands

We are very grateful that you’re taking the time to get to know us and considering us to be the adoptive parents for your child. With this profile we want to give you an insight into our lives. We hope that you follow your heart in choosing the right family for your child and maybe feel that’s us! WE ARE OPEN TO ANY TYPE AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACT THAT YOU WOULD PREFER. WE WOULD LOVE FOR YOUR CHILD TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP (OF ANY KIND) WITH YOU. We want them to grow up knowing where they came from and we will tell about the loving choice you made from the very beginning.

Sabine was on the dance floor with her friends and Erik and his friends joined them dancing and chatting. We soon found out we actually lived on the same block! We started dating, and fell in love. After two years we moved in together and after seven years, in 2014, we bought our lovely home on the hills of Nijmegen.

Around that time we started trying to grow our family. However, even the best laid plans don’t always work out as we wished for. After struggling with infertility for several years, we learned that we wanted to be parents more than we wanted to be pregnant, which is why we chose to grow our family through adoption. Since this decision we have been talking, reading and learning about adoption and we are really excited to adopt a newborn from the USA. WE CAN’T WAIT TO RAISE CHILDREN TOGETHER, LOVING AND CHERISHING THEM. We are grateful to have the opportunity to be able to adopt in the USA!

Fun Facts About Us:
• We have been together since the summer of 2007.
• We are a loving aunt and uncle to five nephews and a niece
• We enjoy gardening together
• We both like to play field hockey, and go hiking and skiing
• We love to travel, visiting different countries, places and cultures and meeting all kinds of people. Some of our favorites are Spain, Italy, Costa Rica, Brazil and of course the, USA!
• We enjoy going to music concerts, theater and (stand up) comedy

Hello! We are Sabine and Erik from the Netherlands

Meet Sabine

I grew up in a small village. My mother was a kindergarten teacher and my father laid down his work to take care of me and my two younger sisters. My father also was the driving force of the public open-air swimming pool and recreational area in our town. We all spent a lot of days and after-school hours there swimming, playing and sunbathing and we really enjoyed it. I also loved reading books, every week I went to the library to get new ones!

I came to our hometown Nijmegen to study psychology. I had a great time as a student, and I made a lot of friends. I work as a child psychologist and love to help children, who had a less carefree start, with their problems. I also teach at the Dutch post-University as a specialist in education of child psychology and act as a supervisor for less experienced child psychologists.

I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A MOTHER. I WOULD LOVE RAISING CHILDREN WITH ERIK, PLAYING, HUGGING AND LOVING THEM! I can’t wait to have a family of our own! When we have kids I plan to work less hours and work more from our home. I will love spending a lot of time with our future child.

More About Sabine by Erik: I love to see Sabine interact with our niece and nephews and children of friends of ours. Nothing would make me more happy than to see her parenting a child with me. SABINE IS CARING, LOVING, SMART, DRIVEN (IN A GOOD AND POSITIVE WAY) AND CURIOUS. THAT’S WHAT WOULD MAKE HER A GREAT MOM! She also likes to sit down and relax, reading a book and listening to music. What I also love about her is that we can do all kinds of active things together, like gardening and hiking, but we can also just chill and relax together, go to a concert or a movie.

Meet Erik

I grew up with my loving parents and two sisters in Nijmegen. My father had his own company and my mother was a handicraft teacher. I have my creativity from my mother and my commercial feeling from my father. Growing up, I had lots of friends and I played field hockey (which I still do).

After finishing high school I studied (Dutch) Law. I now work as a corporate lawyer, mostly for businesses who have (financial) problems. In my work I’m driven to help others solve their problems and help them out. I also do volunteer work: I’m in charge of fundraising and crowd funding for the most monumental building of Nijmegen, which dates back to 1272, and I’m on a board which leads a small museum for Nijmegen’s history.

More About Erik, by Sabine: Erik has lots of energy and he is always happy. He loves working in our garden, he has even built some slides and a great hut by himself for visiting children to play in! WHEN WE HAVE KIDS AROUND, HE PLAYS A LOT WITH THEM, INDOORS AND OUTDOORS. He has fun with them playing soccer or playing with Lego. Erik also loves listening to music and reading the newspaper and a variety of cultural magazines and supporting the local soccer team.

HE IS FUNNY, HE MAKES JOKES AND DOES SILLY DANCES TO MAKE ME LAUGH. I love being with him because he makes me really happy and his positive energy is inspiring. I can’t wait to see him become a father!

The People We Love

Our Family: We’re both from a family of five! Erik’s parents, Ton and Els, have been married for 45 years and live nearby in Nijmegen. So does Sabine’s youngest sister, Margot, with her 6-year-old son, Revan. Unfortunately, Sabine’s father, Kees, passed away in 2015; Sabine’s mother and Sabine’s other sister, Lennie, with her husband and a 2019 newborn, Fedde, still live in Sabine’s birth town; a small village in the south-west of the Netherlands.

Erik’s sisters both live about a one-hour drive from Nijmegen. The eldest, Marike, lives with her 10-year-old son Danavir, who is half Hindu-Surinam. Erik’s other sister Suzanne and her husband Willem and have two sons, Tycho and Boris, and daughter Saar. We love to have them around and play with the children in our garden.

We get together with the families on birthdays and holidays like Christmas and Easter and the typical Dutch holiday Sinterklaas. Both our families are excited and very supportive of the upcoming adoption and will welcome them warmly in their hearts!

Our Friends: WE ALSO LOVE SPENDING TIME WITH OUR FRIENDS. Sometimes we meet for dinner or a BBQ, sometimes just for a cup of coffee or drinks. Sometimes we hang around all day in our garden or we go on a day-trip. We have some old friends from high school and University, some of our colleagues turned friends, and we have friends from sports. Sabine has friends from her choir and Erik from his volunteer work. Our group of friends is diverse and we like that.

All of our family and friends are very supportive of our plans to adopt and begin our family.

Our Home and Closing Thoughts

Our Home: We live in Nijmegen, Netherlands, an ancient Roman town with about 170,000 people. We live at the edge of town, in the hills of Nijmegen. It is about 1 mile to the city center with all kinds of shops, bars, restaurants, cinema’s and theaters. Nijmegen is a city with a university which creates a lively vibe. Nijmegen is a lovely social town with a lot of cultural events.

WE HAVE A LOVELY HOME WITH A BEAUTIFUL GARDEN. THE HOUSE WAS BUILT IN 1854 AND HAS LOTS OF OLD CHARACTERISTICS! We bought it in 2014, restored it and we are ready to raise a family here.

The garden is large with all kinds of entertainment. Sabine especially loves the greenhouse and grows herbs, fruits and vegetables. Erik likes to maintain the paths and expand the possibilities to explore the garden by making new tracks. We both like to play with our nephews and niece in the garden, but also like to relax, taking in the sun, reading a book and having a drink or BBQ with friends and family. We also like to get to know the plants, birds and wild life in our garden and introduce little ones to it. IT IS IMPORTANT TO US TO TEACH CHILDREN TO RESPECT NATURE AND ALL WILDLIFE.

Traditions Our Country Celebrates: THE NETHERLANDS IS KNOWN TO BE A VERY OPEN AND OPEN-MINDED SOCIETY. We love that everybody is welcome and we are open to new cultures, ideas and beliefs. As a kingdom we have a King and Queen with only ceremonial tasks. We have a chosen government that rules the country. We celebrate Kingsday as our National holiday, like you celebrate the 4th of July. A typical Dutch holiday is the celebration of “Sinterklaas”. In this event families give presents to and write poems about each other. It really is something kids look forward to all year! We also celebrate Christmas, and “your” Halloween is becoming more popular every year here, too.

ADOPTION FROM THE UNITED STATES IS BECOMING MORE COMMON IN THE NETHERLANDS. Your child will be part of the growing family here in the Netherlands, of adoptive children from the USA.

Our Promise To Your Child:
• We are going to love and nurture your child and raise them to be a confident and independent grown-up.
• We will help them find their path in life and support them in the choices they face.
• We will love nurturing, hugging and playing with them.
• Your child can enjoy themselves endlessly crawling, running, swinging on our swing and sliding down the slides in our garden.
• They may also love: playing soccer and field hockey, collecting stones and branches, picking flowers, climbing trees and building tree houses.
• We want to give them all kinds of experiences as they grow up, including vacations and trips for them to meet different people and cultures.
• They will enter a big family with grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins, who will welcome your child into their lives.
• We will tell your child about their earliest history and their adoption story while they grow up.
• We will be open about the adoption and tell them how much you love them.
• We are really excited to begin a family and provide your child with a loving, nice, warm, stable and safe home!

In Closing: Thank you so much for reading our profile. We hope it comforts you to know that we will do everything in our power to create a warm and stable home for your child, where they can grow up feeling comfortable to express themselves, be curious, make mistakes and above all, feel loved. If you decide to place your trust in us, we will make sure that your child is raised in a loving and caring environment.

THROUGH ADOPTION WE WILL ALWAYS BE CONNECTED WITH YOU AND THEREFORE WE SEE YOU AS EXTENDED FAMILY. We are open to staying in contact, sharing pictures and updates with you throughout your child’s life, but if you prefer less contact we will understand that as well.

From the bottom of our hearts, we wish you all the best in making the right decision for you and your baby, whatever your decision will be.
