Jason and Katie
Dear Birth Mother
Hi! We are Katie, Jason and Sylvia from Southern California. Thank you for taking the time to learn about our family, and for considering us as you plan for your child’s future. Living in Los Angeles, we’ve been so fortunate to build our writing careers and have a biological child of our own. We’ve always known we wanted to bring another child into our family, but complications from our first labor and delivery make another pregnancy unsafe.
We know we have so much more love to give, and we hope adoption will allow us to share it. We’d be deeply honored if we could help you realize your dreams for your child as you generously and courageously help us realize our dream of completing our family. We can’t wait to meet you and learn more about your story.
About Us: We met in New York City in the early days of online dating. Jason had decided to write a blog about all his dating adventures, but after our first few dates, it became clear we’d found all the adventure we needed in each other. The blog fizzled out, but our love story has been going strong since 2004.
In 2010, Jason knew his TV writing career would soon require moving to Los Angeles, and he didn’t want to go without Katie. He proposed on a mountaintop in Yosemite National Park that summer. We were married in 2011, surrounded by family and friends in lower Manhattan with a view of the Statue of Liberty. It was the perfect New York send-off. A few months later, we moved to Los Angeles and never looked back.

I grew up in rural Vermont, and from a young age I loved reading, writing, and learning about the world we live in. I work as a freelance writer and editor, specializing in health, science, and the environment, and I am currently working on some fiction and children’s book projects. The flexible nature of this work means I will be able to spend lots of time at home with our future child, and I can’t wait to have that chance.
I was brought up to believe we should always leave a place better than we found it, whether it’s a hiking trail, a park, a home, or a community. I try to live that ethic, and it’s important to me to instill in my children the same sense of respect, care, and responsibility for others and for our world.
More About Katie by Jason: The first time I talked to Katie on the phone, she was playing Scrabble in the park with a senior citizen she’d just met. On our first date, she enthusiastically joined me at a tiki bar for a ukulele concert. How can you not love a woman like that? I was first drawn to Katie’s adventurous spirit and love of music and food, but I soon came to love her deep moral character and her devotion to family and friends. She is my cheerleader, my sounding board, and my emotional anchor. After our daughter arrived, I had the joy of seeing another amazing side of Katie. As a mother, she has boundless patience and a fierce and abiding love. I am so grateful to be on this journey with Katie, and I can’t wait to be impressed and captivated by her all over again when we adopt our future child.
Fun Facts About Katie:
- When I’m stressed out, I bake. Great British Baking Show is my favorite comfort TV.
- I used to write songs and sing in a band that played at New York City dive bars.
- Go-to karaoke song: “Walking After Midnight” by Patsy Cline.
- I have a master’s degree in environmental education and love connecting kids with nature.
I had an active and happy childhood growing up in Long Island, New York. My parents were both educators, and raised my younger brother and me with an appreciation for hard work and consideration for others, while still being able to laugh at ourselves. Those values have always helped guide me.
I’m a TV comedy writer, and I’ve written for some terrific shows and even won a few Emmy awards for my work. I feel incredibly lucky to spend all day collaborating with funny people and making other people laugh. My career allows me plenty of quality time with my family, since I frequently work from home, and my colleagues are often parents who understand and respect the importance of a healthy work/family balance.
More About Jason by Katie: Jason is simply the best person I know. I was initially attracted to his sense of humor and his enthusiasm for adventure and trying new things. He’s one of those people who gets along with everyone. I love Jason’s kindness, thoughtfulness, and empathy most of all. As a partner he’s supportive, respectful, and communicative. He makes our marriage feel like a safe harbor, and he makes our home my favorite place to be. He is the most amazing father: engaged, playful, and gentle. He’s always stepping up to give our daughter, Sylvia, whatever she needs, whether it’s comforting her when she takes a spill on her scooter or playing Candyland for the fiftieth time that day. I can’t imagine a better partner or more loving, fun dad — we’re beyond lucky to have him.
Fun Facts About Jason:
- I’ve been playing piano since I was four and love to play at home.
- I used to write and perform sketch and stand-up comedy in New York.
- I can tell you the band behind almost any 1980’s one-hit wonder.
- Go-to karaoke song: “Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl)” by Looking Glass.
Our daughter Sylvia was born in 2017. Playful, curious, affectionate, and outgoing, she makes new friends easily and treats others with kindness and empathy. She loves being silly and is developing quite the sense of humor, complete with a deep appreciation of poop jokes. She’ll make a loving, caring, and super fun big sister.
Sylvia’s Favorite Things:
- Bike rides with family friends
- Her books on dinosaurs and bugs
- Splashing in muddy puddles
- Dad’s red pepper pasta, pierogis, and chocolate ice cream
- Making up silly words and stories
Our Home and Community: Our home is in a wonderful neighborhood of Los Angeles called Atwater Village, which we love for its many playgrounds, good schools, and friendly neighbors. We are close to the LA River and beautiful Griffith Park, where we like to walk or bike, and we are surrounded by young families and small businesses that give Atwater a true community feel. There are even a few stables nearby, where Sylvia likes to say hi to the horses. Our home is minutes from the heart of LA and its incredible museums, restaurants, and kid-friendly activities (favorites include the LA Zoo and the Kidspace Children’s Museum). The beach is a favorite day trip, and the mountains are a short drive away. When adventure calls, camping, skiing and several national parks are within a couple of hours. We love LA, our home, and everything Southern California has to offer.
Our Family and Friends
Though our extended family is scattered all over the country, we keep in close touch and get together whenever we can.
Jason’s mom and dad, Penny and Steve (aka Grandma and Poppy) live in New York but spend half the year at their LA condo right near us. They lavish love and attention on Sylvia every chance they get. Katie’s mom, Diane (aka Grammy), lives in Vermont with her husband, Dave (aka Grampy), and their dog, Rosie. She visits often, bringing along her latest hand-knit creations for Sylvia to wear, and in the summer we visit them for some boating on Lake Champlain.
Family holidays and traditions are important to us, and we typically spend Christmas in Vermont with Diane, Dave, Katie’s older sister, Jennifer, and her two kids, Anthony (22) and Isabella (18), who live in Indiana. Every Hanukkah, we fry up latkes with Penny, Steve, and Jason’s brother, Andrew — a super fun uncle based in Seattle who brings presents and stories from his far-flung travels.
Katie’s mom comes from a large family and another cherished tradition is the family reunion we have every other summer at her aunt and uncle’s place in Ohio. So far there are 12 aunts and uncles, 10 cousins, and 3 nieces and nephews — and counting!
Our Promise to You: We will always love your child, unconditionally, for exactly who they are. We will always support them in exploring their interests, growing their capabilities, and following their dreams.
We will give them a safe, loving, warm, and fun home. We will always take their needs and feelings seriously — while not taking ourselves too seriously. Your child will know their adoption story and will always know how amazing you are and how much you love them.
