Rick & Sakena
Hello, We’re Sakena and Rick
Thank you for taking the time to review our family profile. We are humbled that you might consider us to raise your child.
The adoption journey is one that we are fully committed to and are we excited to raise our first child. We promise to create a loving home for our child and make sure that he/she knows that their adoption story is one founded in courage and love.
As parents, we promise to teach our child:
2. Unconditional love
3. Self-love and respect
4. The importance lessons of love and forgiveness in the Bible
5. To always love learning
6. To appreciate differences in others regardless of race, gender, culture, or religion
7. Grace and empathy
We met seven years ago on an online dating site. After several days of getting to know each other, we decided to meet in person at a local coffee shop.
We connected with ease and were delighted by the flow of our conversation. We found ourselves to be two quirky, artsy, African-American foodies navigating single life in a (biggish) small town that’s known for being family-oriented and tech-driven. We shared a number of uncanny coincidences and mentioned just as many things that made us different.
Three years later, we got married in a small AME church in the Hill District— a historic black neighborhood in Pittsburgh, PA.
Our Travel Adventures:
Since we tied the knot, we have traveled every year for our anniversary and sometimes just for fun. We’ve been to Montreal, Ireland, Berlin, Amsterdam, Savannah, Santa Fe, New York and Ann Arbor. We love exploring new cultures and trying new foods.
Rick Through Sakena’s Eyes
Rick is a generous and selfless human being- he will drop everything to help a friend in need. Children are drawn to Rick because he is a nurturing and patient person.
Ever since our first date, he has demonstrated chivalry. He still opens the car door for me, even if we’re just driving to the grocery store.
Rick is a game design professor at a local university, and he loves teaching! He can make the most complex topics easy to understand. Whether he’s in the classroom or behind the camera, he is an artist through and through. He captures beautiful landscapes with his camera and invents new dishes in the kitchen on a weekly basis.
Rick keeps me active with his love of fitness. He enjoys jiu jitsu, lifting weights, taking long walks, running and playing tennis. Staying fit and healthy has always been a top priority for him.
Sakena Through Rick’s Eyes
Sakena is resilient and strong in the face of any adversity, and is sensitive to the needs of others. What I love most about her is that she is emotionally open and accepting – she loves to share what she is feeling.
Sakena is a marketing professional who builds websites for a local university. She is a talented writer who taught herself to write code. She loves taking on new challenges.
Sakena enjoys making family and loved ones happy with generosity and care. She knits scarves for me and hats for babies of relatives and friends. She is a person who is all about selfless care and love for her friends and family.
Our Families, Our Squad
Sakena and Rick both come from loving homes.
Sakena’s mother retired in North Carolina and is very excited about becoming a grandmother for the second time.
Rick’s parents live in DC, and are looking forward to packing up their SUV to welcome their second grandchild.
Both Sakena and Rick have brothers who are both excited to be uncles for the first time to their siblings. Their 8-year-old niece and 2-year-old nephew are already talking about their future cousin.
We are fortunate to have friends across 13 states and two continents, a good number of them have been in our lives since childhood. We also have a group of close friends and colleagues in Pittsburgh who we hang out with regularly. Our squad runs deep and they are so excited to welcome a new baby into our extended family!
He’s affectionate, energetic and beloved by our neighbors. He earned his name because when he’s excited he jumps in place on his hind legs with his paws perched in mid-air. He snuggles on the couch with Sakena and plays tug of war and fetch with Rick. He’s tender with children and when our niece and nephew come to visit he follows them everywhere they go.
Thank you for taking the time to get to know us. We hope we have provided you with a better picture of our lives and the life that your child would experience.
We look forward to meeting with you and talking to you soon. We promise to honor your wishes of communication, to teach your child to explore, learn, be patient, and embrace life fully.
