Steve and Laura

Dear Birth Mother

We are Laura and Steve from sunny Los Angeles, California. We’re honored that you are considering us! No matter what home you choose, we send our love and massive respect for the decision you’re making for your child. We have so much love and life experience to share and we’d love nothing more than to grow our family. And part of that will be maintaining a life-long relationship with you, as well. Thanks for taking the time to get to know us!

Our Story: We met fifteen years ago, working together in Los Angeles. We were both starting our career as comedy writers, and, at the time, career and personal development took the front seat in both of our lives. Steve went on to write for The Office, 30 Rock, Veep… Laura was busy on Brooklyn 99, Fresh off the Boat and Superstore. As the years passed, we became best friends and finally realized three years ago that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together. We were married in April of 2019.

Our community is hugely important to us, and we have a big support network of lifelong friends. Since becoming partners, we have been to Japan for a dream vacation, French Polynesia for our amazing tropical honeymoon, and most recently Mexico City and Oaxaca for New Years. Which is just to say, we love to travel. We both believe that seeing other cultures and communities is a vital part of life.

Six Things We Will Teach Our Child:

  • The value of nature
  • The importance of honesty
  • Respect for others
  • Love for family and friends
  • How to stand up for yourself and others
  • Cultivating a helpful spirit

Five Ways We Show Our Love:

  • Sharing laughter
  • Making the bed
  • Hugs and kisses

  • Sharing a museum day
Dear Birth Mother

About Steve

Meet Steve by Steve: I was raised in Needham, Massachusetts where I used to ride my bike and catch tadpoles in the pond. It was my mom, dad, my sister and me. We’d go up to Maine for a week in the summer to swim in the cold water, and we’d spend Christmas and Thanksgiving with some of my many cousins. I went to the local schools, until I got an opportunity to go to Roxbury Latin, a school in Boston founded in 1645. It was a tough school academically but I loved it, I was the captain of the cross-country team and the president of my class.

I went to Harvard College, where I studied history and was president of the Harvard Lampoon, a comedy magazine. That experience made me think I’d like to try to make a living as a writer. After college I got a job as a writer for The Late Show with David Letterman. It was so exciting to move to New York City and be a part of one of my favorite shows. I went on to work as a writer and producer for Last Call with Carson Daly, American Dad (where I met Laura), 30 Rock, The Office, and Veep.

Laura’s Thoughts About Steve: My favorite thing about Steve is his unrelenting interest in life! He’s a voracious reader, and every day he’s absorbed cool facts on some new subject and will share them with me at dinner. I love that we’re both writers. We’re able to talk in an easy shorthand about our work.

And maybe most important of all, we make each other laugh. Steve is incredibly driven to make sure we live the best life possible, a trait that assures me that he’ll be a great father. His heart is huge and he has love spilling over. When we were married, he generously opened his house not just to me, but to my three rescue dogs. Now he loves them as much as I do, assigning each a voice, as we imagine what they’d tell us if they could.

About Laura

Meet Laura by Laura: I grew up in Houston, Texas with my parents and one older sister. I always knew I wanted to be a writer and consider myself incredibly lucky to have had a wonderful career doing so. In my free time, I love being active. A great day for me is a nice run, followed by some yoga to reset my tight legs. This year I ran the Los Angeles marathon, and I’m excited continue to be involved in community exercise events. Steve has a house in Joshua tree and we spend most of our days there taking rambling hikes through the desert. In the winter, I knit hats to keep us cozy in the desert and in the summer I tend our garden and cook with whatever fresh ingredients we can find.

Steve’s Thoughts About Laura: Laura is the kindest person I’ve ever met. She is a constant joy, so full of sweetness and love and compassion. She’s made our home so beautiful and warm and comfortable. Lately she’s taken to fixing up our garden, messing around with compost and planting wonderful flowers and vegetables. She’s very crafty around the house, a great cook making us fun and healthy meals, and good source of advice and guidance on everything from how to get a stain out of a shirt to what decisions I should make in my work!

As I said in my wedding vows, going to the carwash with Laura is more fun than going to Paris with anyone else. She’d be the mother I’d pick for my children, because I know she’d set a good example, treat them always with kindness and love, and model strength as well as comfort for them. Laura has so much love to give, she’s a terrific wife and friend and I know she will be a great mom!

About Laura

Our Home

We live in a three-bedroom, two-bath house built in 1923 in a quiet neighborhood in Los Angeles. Every Sunday morning, we get up and walk to the local farmers’ market to get fresh fruits and vegetables and flowers, and have a Frito Pie with “Smokin’ Joe’s” cart (we hired them to serve their food at our wedding). Sunday nights you can find us in the kitchen, making dinner from whatever we bought that day. If tomatoes are in season, Steve will make a red sauce for pasta, the way he learned from the Italian side of his family. Or, if it’s root vegetable season, Laura will whip up a curry.

We have a great yard that kids can run around and play in – right now it’s mostly our three dogs and a cat that enjoy it, but we love when our friends’ kids come over.

Our house is full of books and musical instruments and art and little things we’ve collected on trips all over the world.

Our Cabin: We own a small cabin in Joshua Tree. We love to go there for a long weekend, take hikes in the rocks, see the birds and rabbits and tortoises, sit by the fire, look at the stars, and enjoy the quiet and magic of the desert. The dogs love all the new smells that the desert offers and we agree! It’s important to us that we share our love of the natural world with our children. We’ve recently become involved in the Mojave Desert Land Trust, in an effort to help preserve the community and the land around the National Park.

Family and Friends

We’ve both been blessed with great families. Laura’s mom and dad live in Houston, but they’re here often to see their grandson James, who lives nearby. Laura’s sister Lynne and her husband Dave are an important part of our lives here in Los Angeles. We’ll go out to dinner or to the park or gather on special occasions. Laura helps James with his homework And we both created make-shift Zoom classes keep him entertained during quarantine.

Steve’s parents live in Needham, Massachusetts, but we try and visit them at least once a year. Steve’s dad is a retired judge, a true gentleman, and Steve’s mom is a former social worker who was always very involved in school activities and helping out in the community. Steve’s sister Carolyn and his brother-in-law Scott live in Massachusetts, too, and spend some time at their beach house in Rhode Island, where we love to visit to swim and paddleboard and eat seafood and ice cream by the water.

We both have great sets of friends centered around our groups from college. And now lots of our friends are friends with each other and have families of their own. We’ve learned so much from watching our friends parent and can’t wait to have the experience ourselves.

Our Loved Ones Describe Us As:

  • Generous
  • Honest
  • Always full of good cheer
  • Available
  • Silly

In Closing – Thank You: We’re excited to bring a child into our lives to share our values: the importance of caring for others, for animals, and for our natural environment. And of course, the importance of love and laughter – the main thing that has fueled our lives together.
