Hello! We are Cody and Justin from San Diego, California. We were both raised in big, loving families and have always dreamed of becoming dads. We met during graduate school at a dinner hosted by one of Cody’s professors. Cody remembers barely stepping into the room when a stranger—Justin—playfully teased him. Cody responded with a witty comeback, and it was love at first joke. We immediately felt a strong connection and bonded over our shared sense of humor and complementary personalities. We were drawn to each other’s ambition, values, and sense of balance. After finishing school, our careers took us to different cities, and we spent seven years in a long-distance relationship. It was challenging, but we stayed committed and never let go of our dream. In 2017, Cody found an attorney position in San Diego, where Justin was a professor. In 2019, we were married outdoors along the San Diego Bay, surrounded by sunshine and over 200 friends and family. It was the best day of our lives. Over the past 16 years, we’ve shared countless memories—holidays, camping trips, travel, and everyday joys—and we’re excited to make even more as a family with our future child.

I grew up in a working-class family in Pittsburgh, with my parents, Deb and Ray, and my younger brother, Adam. With grandparents, 14 aunts and uncles, and 19 cousins nearby, I learned the value of showing up for family and staying connected to community. As a kid, I loved animals, music, and volunteering with my parents. I worked at the local zoo, played violin in school, and joined programs that aimed to improve our neighborhood. Those early experiences shaped who I am today: a biology professor with a creative streak and a strong sense of service. Running has also been a big part of my life. It helps me stay focused, healthy, and balanced—qualities I know will serve me well as a parent, whether I’m playing outside, keeping up with a toddler, or modeling an active lifestyle. Today I feel lucky to share a stable and loving life with Cody. My work as a biology professor gives me the flexibility to be present and involved as a parent. I’m excited to raise a child in a home filled with curiosity, support, and connection.

Justin is the most thoughtful, caring, and passionate person I have ever met. He has a great sense of humor and keeps life fun, whether he’s making us laugh or cooking a delicious meal from scratch. It’s not surprising that his students consistently give him high praise for his mentorship—he’s patient, kind, and always generous with his time. I know those same qualities will make him a wonderful father. Before I met Justin, I hoped to have a family someday, but it felt out of reach. Meeting him changed everything. I can now see the future we’ve dreamed of—full of love, laughter, and learning—coming to life with a child at its center.

I grew up in a small town in southwest Michigan as the youngest of five siblings—Eric, Ben, Angie, and Marc. I’m proud of each of them; they’ve built wonderful families and fulfilling careers. Being an uncle to ten incredible nieces and nephews has brought me so much joy and purpose—and it’s made me even more excited to become a dad. I lost my father at age 13, but I’ve always been surrounded by deep, unconditional family love. My mom, Lori, is an amazing “Grammie,” and my stepdad, Rick, is adored by all the grandkids. The heart of our family is “Memaw,” my 93-year-old grandmother Margaret, whose warmth and wisdom keep us all connected. I’m also fortunate to have many aunts, uncles, and cousins who feel more like parents and siblings than extended family.

After high school, I moved to Chicago to attend Loyola University. During college, I spent a year studying in Rome, which broadened my perspective on the world. I traveled throughout Europe and even visited the pyramids in Egypt—experiences that deepened my appreciation for different cultures and viewpoints. After earning my law degree, I spent over ten years working at several law firms. More recently, I moved into an attorney role at a medical technology company. This hybrid position offers me flexibility and great benefits—creating an environment where I can fully show up as both a professional and a parent.

Cody is smart, funny, caring, and perhaps the most grounded and ethical person I know. Before meeting him, I didn’t believe in love at first sight—or first joke—but I was instantly drawn to his wit, warmth, and quiet confidence. As our relationship grew, I came to admire his loyalty, his deep compassion, and his unwavering sense of integrity. Cody has close friendships that go back to childhood and always makes time to stay connected with loved ones. He’s steady, devoted, and full of love—the kind of person who makes others feel safe and valued. Cody will be an incredible “papa,” because he has the patience, strength, and heart that help children feel secure and truly flourish.

We live in a cozy three-bedroom bungalow, located in the historic and family-friendly neighborhood of North Park in San Diego. Our community is vibrant and walkable—we’re just steps from parks and the local library, and a short drive from the zoo, wildlife park, museums, aquarium, and the beach. The neighborhood has a strong sense of connection, with holiday parades, summer festivals, and outdoor movie nights that bring everyone together. The school district is highly rated for both academics and diversity, making it a wonderful place to raise children.

We rescued our dog, Professor Wrigley, when she was a year old. She is now nine—loving, quirky, and full of playful energy. Wrigley is a poodle-terrier mix who adores naps, car rides, and her four daily walks. She’s especially gentle and protective around children, and we know she’ll happily welcome a new baby into her “pack.” We also have a saltwater aquarium with colorful coral, fish, and “Marvin” the cleaner shrimp. It adds a touch of magic to our home and always fascinates visiting kids.

Family is incredibly important to us, and we’re lucky to have a big, supportive one. Most of our relatives live in the Midwest, but some are right here in San Diego. Justin’s brother and his wife live nearby and can’t wait to help us welcome a child into our home. Cody’s cousin, his wife, and their two daughters live just around the corner. We’re also surrounded by a close-knit group of friends who feel like family and are ready to help create a loving village for our future child.
